500 vacancies at Cardiff job fair
February 3, 2011
More than 500 call centre vacancies were offered at a job fair in Cardiff today.
Cardiff Council and JobCentre Plus organised the event, held at Cardiff Central Library between 10am and 3pm.
Five companies were there speaking to potential employees about their vacancies:
AA Insurances / Driving School
Admiral
British Gas
Conduit
Tesco Customer Care Centre
Peter Cronin, Cardiff Council’s Employment Liaison Officer, said that perceptions of call centre employment were changing.
He estimated that around 1,000 would be coming to today’s fair. Queues to speak to Tesco representatives went out of the door. A similar event advertising retail jobs in September attracted 5,000 people.
I asked Mr Cronin to assess the state of the job market in South Wales and the capital.
British Gas was not offering full-time jobs until later in 2011. The gas and electricity supplier was at the fair advertising its part-time positions.
Andrew Sims is the HR Recruitment Manager for British Gas in Cardiff.
Mr Sims said British Gas was keen to continue working closely with JobCentre Plus on events like the job fair. He was quick to praise the employment services organisations which help people get into work.
